Summary
A paper sleeve for a vinyl record, the self titled album by The Smiths. One side of the sleeve has printed lyrics for all of the songs on the record in red type on a grey background. The other side has black and white head and shoulder portrait photographs of the four band members: from left to right, Steven Morrissey taken by Romi Mori, Johnny Marr taken by Andy Catlin, Andy Rourke taken by Joelle Depont and Mike Joyce, also taken by Joelle Depont. At the bottom of the sleeve on this side are recording and production details and a thank you list from the band. The photographs and the printed text are laid over a background image of the American actor Joe Dallesandro taken from the film Flesh produced by Andy Warhol in 1968 which is also used on the front cover of the cardboard outer sleeve of the record.
Provenance
Paper sleeve for a vinyl record, the self titled album by The Smiths. With photographs by Romi Mori, Andy Catlin and Joelle Depont and released by Rough Trade Records on 20th February 1984. Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood via Discogs on 9th March 2020 as part of the Collecting Cultures Exploring Childhoods project.
