Summary

A 19th century printed leaflet with 'Description of Machines Used In The Cleansing Of Chimnies (sic), The Second Reading of the Climbing Boys' Abolition Bill, in the House of Lords, is fixed for Monday next, the 8th of March instant' printed in black ink on one side. The handwritten annotation 'this day' follows with the name and address of Earl Digby in handwritten black ink. Presumably this is his handwriting. When opened, the leaflet has a black and white illustration of a cutout of a house with chimney sweeping brushes in various chimneys. Each is labelled A to G and o, p and k. This illustration also includes chimney sweeps and climbing boys walking past and on the roofs of houses. The illustration is entitled 'A Sketch, Explanatory of the Use of Machines in the Cleansing of Chimnies (sic)'. The bottom half of the leaflet goes through each chimney cleansing machine in turn, highlighting their problems. This is written by James Dean, agent for the petitioners against the bill, arguing that climbing boys are best for cleaning chimneys. The printer's name and address is given at the bottom but the leaflet is undated. The leaflet has four stains on the back, where presumably it was stuck onto a wall.
