A flat metal toy horse, painted cream with black spots. It is attached to a metal, double hoop, painted orange. The underside of the outer hoop has a rebate. There is considerable paint loss on the whole object. The horse is accompanied by a cream paper envelope. The following inscription is handwritten in pencil on it 'Edward's little horse, His greatest treasure, sent by his father in India'. Total number of items is 2.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Miss J C Hart in 1979. She added the note 'It was sent home from India in 1849 as a gift to my grandfather, Edward Chichester Hart, by his father, an army officer serving on the Viceregal staff at that time. As grandfather was born in 1844, he must have been 5 years of age when it reached him, so it is 130 years old! I send it in the envelope inscribed by his adoring sisters; they kept a cupboard full of the family's cast-off toys and games in their cottage at Lingfield, for the entertainment of visiting children, but alas! only the little horse has come to me, else I would post you the lot.'
