Summary
91 magic lantern slides (possibly mid to late 19th century) On display - box with 5 slides only (3 Chinese, 1 black and white cottage, 1 coloured Forth Bridge) Richard Keene and Richard Keene Junior are associated with Burton-on-Trent and Derby and were both photographers (circa 1855 - 1899). The slides are as follows - No's 1-51: Black and white photographs of life on a mission in China. No's.52-71: Coloured photographs of scenes in china. No's.72-79: Black and white photographs with a caption slide stating Ford St. School, Derby, 1914. No's. 80-83: Black and white photographs of buildings in Scotland. No's.84-85: Coloured photographs of the Forth Bridge. o's.86-90: Black and white photographs of houses. No.91: Coloured drawing of half-timbered house. No's.92-97:Black and white photographs of scenes in Britain. Some numbers are not present. There is also an empty wooden magic lantern slide box which has been painted in matt black. On the lid is a paper label with 'Lantern Slides China' and a numbered list of the contents handwritten in black and red ink. The ends are oak and butt jointed, glued and pinned. On the top there is a securing and carrying leather strap and buckle. At each end are brass coloured metal straps to secure the lid. The inside has got five partitions making six compartments. They are covered with green baize cloth. On the base and on the lid are strips of padding to avoid breaking the glass slides. The lid is positioned on the box by two dowels at one end and a single dowel at the other. The lid lifts off from the box. Total number of items is 93.
