Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, Woman Kneeling, Flemish, possibly Oudenaarde, c. 1630-1660. A tapestry panel made up of two pieces sewn together. The larger, left hand piece shows a woman kneeling before a soldier, and the right hand piece has fragments of figures and drapery. There are sections of floral border at the top and bottom.
Full description
There are two large but incomplete tapestry panels and one fragment at Sudbury Hall, which are all related and are probably the remains of a larger set. The subject of the largest panel (no. 653297.1) could be ‘The Family of Darius before Alexander’, indicating that the set originally told the Story of Alexander. The two smaller pieces include warriors and other figures but their subjects are hard to discern. (Helen Wyld, 2013)
