Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Dorothy Shirley, Mrs George Vernon (d.1680) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), inscribed bottom right:: Dorothy Shirley/ Sister to Earl Ferrers/ second Wife to George Vernon Esqe. Sister of Robert Shirley 1st Earl Ferrers, and 2nd wife of George Vernon (builder of the house). A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, seated, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a brown and white decollete dress with blue cloak, in a landscape, her left hand raised to her shoulder, her right hand extended by her side, a distant horizon on the left with trees and cloudy sky, with trees behind her on the right.

Acquired from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Venables-Vernon, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 -1963) and transferred to the National Trust in 1967 through the National Land Fund
