Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Lady, formerly known as Mary Hawtrey, Lady Bankes (1598-1661), in the Pose of Dorothy, Countess of Sunderland after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641) circa 1640. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, both arms extended to right, her right hand holding an orange in her left a spray of blossom, and therefore is probably a marrigae portrait, a tree in a vase; she is wearing a black dress with full pink sleeves and green drape, a pearl necklace and earrings, with flowers tied at the back of her hair. Similar in type to a portrait at Petworth of Lady Dorothy Sidney.
