Oil painting on canvas, Sir John Bankes MP PC (1589-1644) as Lord Chief Justice, aged 54 by Gilbert Jackson (fl.1621-1640), Inscribed: Aetatis Sua 54/ Anno Dni 1643 and Lord Chief Justice Banks/1643/He is father to Lady Borlase of Brockmore Bucks. A three-quarter-length portrait of a mature man, facing, gazing at the spectator, dressed in the robes of Lord Chief Justice, a black cap, cartwheel ruff, black girdle, red robe trimmed with white fur he has a paper in his right hand, left hand by his side.Two-tone brown background. Father of Lady Borlase (Alice Bankes) of Buckmore, Bucks. At the age of 54; became Lord Chief Justice in 1641. The original portrait is at Kingston Lacy in Dorset.

Acquired from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Venables-Vernon, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 -1963) and transferred to the National Trust in 1967 through the National Land Fund
