Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Robert Shirley, 7th Baronet Shirley of Staunton Harold, 1st Earl Ferrers PC (1650-1717) by John Michael Wright (London 1617 - London 1694), inscribed bottom right: Earl Ferrers, circa 1671. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, his left hand touching the pommel of his sword, his right hand on his hip, in a long brown wig, dressed in a dark-coloured coat/cuiraa embroidered with gold with white sleeves with blue ribbons at elbow and wrist, gold-fringed swordbelt, lace cravat, long flowing wig, with richly gold-embroidered waistcoat tied with a blue and gold sash. Created Viscount Tamworth and Earl Ferrers 1711, steward to the Royal household 1685 - 1705. Son of Sir Robert Shirley 4th Bt 1629 - 1656, married firstly Elizabeth Washington in 1671 with whom he had 17 children and secondly, in 1699, Selina Finch with whom he had 10 children.
