Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Margaret Onley, Mrs George Vernon (1642-1675) by John Michael Wright (London 1617 - London 1694), 1659/60. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, her hair dressed with pearls, a ringlet falling on her right shoulder, she is wearing a white dress with a pink cloak, she also has on a pearl necklace and wears a pearl pendant earring, a jewelled bracelet on her right upper arm, and a clasp at her right elbow, she is holding pomegranates in a fold of her skirt, has a sprig of olive in her left hand, landscape background with lake and mountains with a distant horizon with the setting sun. Daughter of Edward Onley,and first wife of George Vernon (builder of the house).
Provenance
Vernon collection transferred to the Treasury in 1967 following death of 9th Lord Vernon, and transferred to The National Trust in 1967
