Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Shepherd and Shepherdess by a Fountain, attributed to Jan Griffier the elder (Amsterdam c.1645 – London 1718). Landscape with sheep and goats, at the edge of a wood; in the centre is a urn on a plinth from the base of which the water gushes through a grotesque mask; the shepherd is playing a transverse flute while she listens; the wood is to the left of the composition, while there is a distant landscape with a mounted figure and other animals to the right.
Provenance
Acquired from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Vernon-Venables, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 -1963) and transferred to the National Trust in 1967 through the National Land Fund
