Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Robert Shirley, 4th Bt (1629-1656), style of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, dark shoulder-length natural hair, and wearing armour, his right hand resting on his helmet on a table before rusticated architecture to his right, and a dark orange drape on the right, his left hand by his side. Husband of Catherine Okeover and father of Dorothy, second wife of George Vernon (builder of the house). He was committed to the Tower of London by Cromwell (for building Staunton Harold Church) where he died.
Provenance
Vernon collection transferred to the Treasury in 1967 following death of 9th Lord Vernon, and transferred to The National Trust in 1967
