Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Vernon (1686-1719) as a Boy by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), inscribed, bottom rigth: H. Vernon Esqe/ Grand Father/ to Lord Vernon A full-length portrait of a young boy, seated under a tree, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, with a dog crouched by his side, on the left, with its head on his lap and which he strokes with his right hand. He is wearing a green coat whose sleeves are looped back to reveal their gold lining, and a red cloak which is draped over his right arm and falls to the ground on the right, white stockings and a lace cravat. Distant horizon on the left with trees. Father of the 1st Lord Vernon George Venables Vernon and son of George Vernon (builder of the house).

Acquired from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Venables-Vernon, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 -1963) and transferred to the National Trust in 1967 through the National Land Fund
