Summary
Oil painting on copper, The Sudbury Cabinet: Adam and Eve and the Tree of Knowledge, studio of Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581 - Antwerp 1642), 17th Century. (inner central panel) With an arched top and flanking gold columns, gilt decorations surround this central image. Adam sits on a mound of earth grasping an apple than Eve delicately hands him from the tree that is in the centre of the composition. The snake is twirled around the trunk of the tree with its head poised about the apple in Eve’s left hand. The palette in this image is much murkier than previous – greens and browns pervade.
