Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Dr Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), after Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792). This is a modern copy of a replica done in 1779 for Topham Beauclerk, which with a portrait of Garrick he left to Bennet Langton. According to Graves and Gronin, Reynolds,1899,II, page 523, they were in the possession of 'P.Massingberd' (presumably Peregrine Langton) but were 'removed from his house by Sir Gregory Lewin for cleaning and by some accident were sold at Sir G.Lewin's sale, May 16 1846, lots 50 and 51,at Christies's....'.The original, painted in 1775, was in Lord Iveagh's collection and now at Tate.

1944, gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd.
