Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Portrait of an Artist (possibly Self-portrait) by James Northcote, RA (Plymouth 1746 – London 1831). A half-length portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator wearing a brown coat, black waistcoat and white stock, holding an artist's palette on his right arm. Said to be a self-portrait of Northcote. Inscribed 'Painting of Northcote' on reverse.

1944, gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd.
