Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Lloyd, Countess of Rothes (d.1820) by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), 1764 - 66. A three-quarter-length portrait, to right, head facing, her left hand held out, wearing peeress's robes; landscape background. Daughter of Gresham Lloyd and Mary Holt (her mother married secondly the 7th earl of Haddington) she married the 10th Earl of Rothes in 1763. He died in 1767 and in 1770 she married Bennet Langton. d.1820. Sittings are recorded in February 1764 and February 1766. It is doubtful whether much more than the head is by Reynolds. Reynolds' pocket books- appointments in 1764; March 21st, May 16th, 23rd and 24th and 1766 February 11th.

1944, gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd.
