Summary
Estate Papers of the Elton family of Clevedon Court Contains deeds, legal and miscellaneous estate papers The archive of the Elton family of Clevedon Court relates almost exclusively to the manor of Clevedon and its estate in that parish. The manor was acquired by the Wake family, temp. Edward IV and passed to Sir Roger Wake. His support for Richard III at Bosworth led to the confiscation of his lands although they were restored in 1501. Sir Baldwin Wake married Abigail, daughter of Sir George Digby and thus the manor passed eventually to John Digby, Earl of Bristol. In order to alleviate his debts, trustees were appointed to receive the profits of the manor, excluding the manor house and demesne. On his death in 1693 it passed to his wife Rachel who sold it to Gabriel Odingsells to help settle the debts in 1700. The estate was acquired by Abraham Elton, a Bristol merchant in 1709, and remained with that family until the present century [see DD\EN/1-5 for deeds leading to the Elton acquisition]. The survival of leases from the 19th century provide a useful source for the study of place names for the parish and the series of 19th century deeds of sale and purchase of lands by the family reveal the growth and development of the town. Many documents have deteriorated through exposure to damp and are defective, particularly a box of leases which has had to be left uncatalogued and which has been placed at the end of the collection. Lucia Maria Rice married Edmund William Elton mid 19th century. Somerset Heritage Centre reference number: DD\EN NRA 28069 Elton
