Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Elton, Mrs Oldfield Bowles (b.1749) by Oldfield Bowles (1739-1810), circa 1770. A portrait of a young woman, full-length, standing centre, gazing at spectator, holding a small gold harp and plucking the strings with her right hand. She has natural brown hair, swept back and wears a white/grey silk 'classical' gown with a reddish silk shawl or scarf draped across her. To her left is a large tree whose foliage frames the distant landscape view on the right, with a hill surmounted with a pillared classical building. Daughter of Sir Abraham Isaac Elton 4th Bt (1718-1790) and Elizabeth Reed (1725-1755) married, the artist Oldfield Bowles (1739-1810).
Provenance
Accepted in lieu of tax 1995 from the estate of Lady Margaret Ann Elton (1915 -1995) and transferred to The National Trust in 1998
