Caption
In this painting, Clevedon is shown much as it remains today – as a manor house of the early fourteenth century – though this particular view precedes the alterations and improvements carried out by Sir Abraham Elton from 1722. Though the artist is unknown, the painterly technique seems to have been inspired by Johannes Kip’s engraved views of neighbouring Gloucestershire, which were published in 1712.
