Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Possibly Elizabeth Collett, Mrs John Durbin (1737-1759) by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), inscribed 'Lady Durbin No.1', although possibly the second wife, Mary, 1759. A portrait of a young woman in a painted oval, half-length, turned to the right, gazing at spectator. Elizabeth Collett married Sir John Durbin (1734-1814) [he was not knighted till 1778 - after her death]; they were parents of Eliza Durbin (1756-1822) the first wife of the Reverend Abraham Durbin, 5th Bt (1755-1842).
Provenance
Recorded by Ellis Waterhouse as at Clevedon Court in 1958. Purchased from Lady Margaret Ann Elton (1915 – 1995), 1981 with the help of grants from the V&A Purchase Fund and the NHMF
