Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Eliza Durbin, Lady Elton (1756-1822) as a Child by Thomas Hickey (1741-1824), circa 1760. A portrait of Eliza Durbin as a young girl, full length turned to the right, her right foot forward, leaning with her left elbow on a stone pedestal table on right, she holds the rim of the table with her right hand and with her left she raises a flower to her nose, gazing at the spectator. She has short brown hair and wears a pink silk dress, with short sleeves, a gauze apron and pink silk shoes. Dominating the background on the left is a large tree-trunk in front of which is a stone seat. On the right beneath the foliage of the overhanging tree is a distant landscape, a wicker basket of flowers sits on the centre of the stone pedestal table on the right. Daughter of Sir John Durbin (1734-1814) and his first wife Elizabeth Collett (1737-1759); married Reverend Sir Abraham Elton, 5th Bt (1755-1842), as his first wife.
