Caption
Atkinson Grimshaw, the son of a Leeds policeman, was a self-taught artist who until 1861 worked as a railway clerk. He mostly depicted the streets and docks of his hometown and often in moonlight of which this painting is a notable exception. It shows a knowledge of the palette and the meticulous rendering of detail of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of which local painter, J. W. Inchbold, had been a member. He was a popular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London from 1874.
