Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Three Personifications of Cities by Robert Fagan (Cork c.1745 – Rome 1816), 1793/95. Three full-length female figures, moving to the right, in classical robes, wearing laurel wreaths in their hair topped with hats in the form of circular walled cities; left to right, facing, head turned to right, almost right profile, left hand on waist and right hand holding a pitcher, the centre figure is turned three-quarters to right, head in right profile, right hand at her side, right hand figure, turns to left, showing left profile, wears a veil from under her hat which she hold up with her right hand, her left hand is held forward to the right
Provenance
Presumably commissioned by Thomas Noel Hill, 2nd Lord Berwick (1770-1832) on his visit to Naples in 1792/3; bequeathed to the National Trust in 1947 with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
