Summary
Oil painting on copper, Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness, Simone Cantarini (1612-1648), circa 1640. A naked, full-length view of the reclining figure of St John the Baptist, in a landscape setting, who is leaning against rocks, holding his reed cross in his right hand with the word 'Ecce' from the inscription 'Ecce Agnus Dei' (Behold the Lamb of God) visible, and looking down at the baptising bowl on the left.
Provenance
In 1847 inventory as by Guido; thence by descent until bequeathed to the National Trust in 1947 with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
