Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Black Horse called 'Bishop', with his Groom in a Landscape by Thomas Stringer (1722 – 1790), signed and dated on a stone in the foreground: T. Stringer pinx 1769 [followed by an inscription giving the horse’s pedigree]. A black horse standing in silhouette to left, in a landscape, at its head a groom, facing, wearing a pink coat and blue collar, holding the horse’s reins with his left hand and pointing to the horse with his right. A stone tablet in the bottom right foreground proclaims the pedigree of 'Bishop': 'Bishop now the property of Noel Hill Esq, was foal'd in 1763. He was bred by Wm. Osbaldeston Esq and got by Samson, his dam by Cade, his grandam by Stoe, his great grandam by Fox, his great great grandam was own sister to Bay Bolton'. The Stringer family, comprising Thomas and two or three sons, all painters, lived at Knutsford in Cheshire, and worked for patrons in the region, including the Egertons of Tatton Park, Knutsford, who married into the Hill family in the 18th century.

1st Lord Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
