Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Hill (formerly Harwood) (1693-1782) by Samuel Hill (fl.1756 - c.1770), signed/Inscribed, bottom left: S. Hill pinxit 1757. A half-length portrait, profile to the right, head facing. In full wig and wearing a grey coat and silver embroidered waistcoat. Apparently a copy of a portrait of Thomas Hill, painted around 1730. Samuel Hill was no relation, but an itinerant Irish painter previously known only for his pastels. The sitter, son of Thomas Harwood (1661-1738) and Margaret Hill (d.1734) assumed the name of Hill in 1712 on inheriting Tern Hall. He married firstly in 1723 Anne Powys (d.1739) by whom he had three children, Richard Hill (1723-1734), Ann Hill (1726-71) who married Robert Burton of Longner and Margaret Hill (1729-1767) who married the Earl of Harborough and secondly in 1740: Susanna Maria Noel (d.1760) daughter of Sir William Noel by whom he had four children, Susanna Hill (1743-1761), Maria Hill (1742-1813 who married (1) Sir Brian Broughton-Delves (d.1766) and (2) Henry Errington, Samuel Hill (1743-1766) and Noel Hill (1745-1789), created 1st Baron Berwick (the builder of Attingham who married in 1768 Anne Vernon (1744-1797).
