Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Hill (formerly Harwood) (1693-1782) by John Smibert (Edinburgh 1688 – Boston, Massachusetts 1751), circa 1722. A three- quarter-length portrait, turned to right. Wearing a grey wig, a blue coat and white stock and cuffs. His right hand outstretched, landscape background. The sitter, son of Thomas Harwood (1661-1738) and Margaret Hill (d.1734) assumed the name of Hill in 1712 on inheriting Tern Hall. He married firstly in 1723 Anne Powys (d.1739) by whom he had three children, Richard Hill (1723-1734), Ann Hill (1726-71) who married Robert Burton of Longner and Margaret Hill (1729-1767) who married the Earl of Harborough and secondly in 1740: Susanna Maria Noel (d.1760) daughter of Sir William Noel by whom he had four children, Susanna Hill (1743-1761), Maria Hill (1742-1813 who married (1) Sir Brian Broughton-Delves (d.1766) and (2) Henry Errington, Samuel Hill (1743-1766) and Noel Hill (1745-1789), created 1st Baron Berwick (the builder of Attingham who married in 1768 Anne Vernon (1744-1797).
Provenance
Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
