Caption
The view is probably taken from the northern point of Ischia looking across the Canale di Procida (a stretch of the Meditteranean Sea) with the peninsula of Capo Miseno in the middle distance, and Mount Vesuvius beyond. The painting was formerly attributed to Hackert, to whom it comes close in style, and by whom there are various other pictures at Attingham. Denis was an Antwerp-born painter who first moved to Paris in 1775, and then in 1786 to Italy, where he married a Roman woman, and was ultimately appointed Court Painter to King Joseph Bonaparte in 1896. He was an early practitioner of plein-air (open air) oil sketches. This picture is signed and dated 1798, and was probably acquired by William Noel-Hill, 3rd Lord Berwick (1773-1842).
