The dead boar is painted twice, to show both its flanks with their black spots. The mastiff stands nearby, with two other dogs, in a rocky wooded landscape at the edge of a forest of oaks; a castle in a valley, and mountains beyond.

Believed to be 2nd Lord Berwick collection. 1847 Catalogue of Paintings, p.10; 1861 Inventory p.215; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
