Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Ruined Temple with a Sacrificial Scene by Vivano Codazzi (Bergamo c.1604 – Rome 1670), circa 1650. A circular temple with Corinthian columns in the centre of which is placed a pagan statue; a sacrificial lamb is led towards a priest among a group of onlookers; behind is a ruined palace facade backed by trees.
Provenance
Christie's, 30 April 1928, lot 144, bought by Leggatt and sold to Lord Berwick (as Panini); bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
