Summary
Oil painting on canvas (circular), Edward Phelips IV (1678-1734), aged 22, in the manner of Mary Beale (Barrow 1633 – London 1699), inscribed Edward Phelips AD 1700 aged 22. Son of John Phelips (1644-1701) of Kilpatrick Co. Cork and London and Alice Molyeux; married, firstly, his cousin Anne Phelips (1687-1707) and, secondly, her sister Elizabeth Phelips (1689-1750), the daughters of Sir Edward Phelips (1638-1699) and Edith Blake. By marrying two of his uncle's three daughters in succession, he eventually achieved the re-integration of the ownership of Montacute. He was MP for Somerset 1772. Oval portrait of a young man, head and shoulders, turned to left, gazing at spectator, in a full shoulder-length pale brown wig, wearing a pink silk gown over a white shirt, and white cravat, over the gown and draped over his left shoulder is a brown silk cloak.
