Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Phelips (d.1714), British (English) School, circa 1700. A three-quarter-length portrait of the third son of Colonel Edward Phelips II (c.1613-1679/80) and Ann Pye (d.c.1698/1700) as a middle-aged man, three-quarter length, seated, turned to right, gazing at spectator, in a full-bottomed brown wig, wearing a red velvet coat, white shirt with white cravat, and white sleeves showing at the wrists; his left arm resting on his thigh, his right hand at his waist holding the bottom of a blue/black cape which is draped on his left arm; the cape covers the chair on which he is sitting and falls on a plinth to the left. Brown background with vague niche indicated. He married Jane Kayleway; they lived at Preston Plucknett.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
