Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Young Girl, British (English) School, late 18th century, previously catalogued as attributed to Sir Henry Raeburn, RA (Stockbridge 1756 – Edinburgh 1823). Portrait of a young girl, half length, turned to right, looking upwards, arms outstretched above head, reaching up to the top of a terracotta urn on the right, her right hand is above her head her left appears behing the urn pulling down a branch which appears across the top; she has pale brown hair falling in curls on her shoulders, wears a white bodice trimmed with green, cream gloves, a green sash and a pale brown skirt. The background composed of trees and sky is unfinished. Possibly reduced.
Provenance
Bought and bequeathed by Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart (1871-1951) to the National Trust and transferred to Montacute House, 1960 after the death of Lady Stewart.
