Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Susan Murrill, Mrs Henry Hill (1717-1794) by Thomas Gainsborough RA (Sudbury 1727 - London 1788), circa 1750-59. Portrait of a Susan Murrill, smiling, half length to right almost in profile, her head facing, gazing at spectator, dark brown hair worn under a close fitting lace cap, (?) cluster earrings and necklet tied at the back of the neck with a yellow silk ribbon, wearing a pale blue satin dress, her right sleeve decorated with a yellow silk bow, a wide shoulder length lace-edged fichu, tied in front with a yellow silk bow. Of Monks Leigh, married in 1744 the Revd Henry Hill (1697-1775) who had succeeded his father as Rector of Buxhall, Suffolk in 1743.

Leslie sale, 13 November 1929, lot 448, bought by Tooth; bought and beqeathed by Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart (1871-1951) to the National Trust and transferred to Montacute House, 1960 after the death of Lady Stewart. Stolen 1961; recovered 1971
