Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Anthony Francis Haldimand (1741-1817) by Sir Thomas Lawrence 1769-1830), circa 1798. A portrait of a mature man, three-quarter length standing, facing. He has powdered hair and is dressed in black with a white neckcloth, his right hand is at his side, and he has a book in his left hand which is supported on a table on the right; a large red curtain is draped in the background and there are documents on table at the left. Member of Parliament, London merchant and founder of the Anglo/Swiss banking house of Morris, Prevost and Co. Farrington recorded in January 1799 that Lawrence was paying court to his daughter. One of his twelve cildren, William ( 1784 - 1862), became a director of the Bank of England and MP for Ipswich, but then lived at his summer villa near Lausanne, which he endowed with a hospital for the poor and an asylum for the blind, and whence he financed the struggle for Greek independence and the Orleans dynasty.
