Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Prince Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, Stadholder of the United Provinces (1583/4-1647), after Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt 1567–1641), inscribed 'Wm P of Orange 1576', 1630. (wrongly inscribed as William the Silent). A portrait of a mature man, head and shoulders turned to right to right, gazing at spectator. He has short brown hair, a moustache and a small pointed beard. He is wearing armour with gilt studs,a lace edged cartwheel ruff and a pink sash embroidered with flowers which he wears over his right shoulder; dark background. Youngest son of William the Silent; married Amalia, Countess of Solms. In gilt frame.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
