Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Edith Phelips, Mrs Carew Mildmay (1694-1772), British (English) School, inscribed with name of sitter and dated 1710. A painted oval portrait of a young woman, half-length, turned slightly to right, gazing at spectator. She has dark brown hair with a ringlet on her left shoulder and wears a blue silk décolleté dress over a white chemise, there are small jewelled buttons on front and sleeve.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
