Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Edward Phelips IV (1678-1734) attributed to Bartholomew Dandridge (London 1691 – London c.1754) and inscribed with the name of the sitter and date 1731. A portrait of a mature man, three-quarter length, standing, turned slightly to the right and gazing at spectator, his right hand is resting on a pedestal on the left, his hat under his left arm, his left hand tucked into his waistcoat. He is in a powdered wig and wears an olive coloured velvet coat and waistcoat, white shirt with frills down front, white shirt cuffs showing at the wrists a ring on the small finger of his right hand. Landscape background trees and bushes on the left, behind the pedestal with a distant view of wooded park to the right. Son of John Phelips (1644-1701) of Kilpatrick Co. Cork and London and Alice Molyeux; married (i) his cousin Anne Phelips (1687-1707) and (ii) her sister Elizabeth Phelips (1689-1750), the daughters of Sir Edward Phelips (1638-1699) and Edith Blake. By marrying two of his uncle's three daughters in succession, he eventually achieved the re-integration of the ownership of Montacute. He was MP for Somerset 1772. The painting is an expanded version of the painted oval dated 1730 in Curzon's Room.
