Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Edward Phelips III (1638-1699), British (English) School, inscribed with the name of the sitter and dated 1685. A portrait of a mature man, three-quarter length, turned to the left and gazing at the spectator. He is wearing a dark curled shoulder-length wig, with a centre-parting, a breastplate over a brown leather jerkin with elaborately embroidered sleeves, showing gathered white sleeve cuffs, a white lace cravat and a large shot-crimson and silver sash, tied at the waist with a large fringed bow on his left hip. Emerging from beneath the sash is an elaborately embroidered sword belt in which he wears a sword with a gold hilt. His right hand rests on the top of his helmet with its visor raised. The helmet is on a plinth or tree-stump on the left; in his left hand he holds a baton. Landscape background with a large rock behind Sir Edward and a distant view to left. Son of Edward Phelips II and Anne Pye; married, firstly, Dorothy Cheeke and, secondly, Edith Blake. He had no children by his first wife and three daughters by his marriage to Edith Blake.
