Summary

Oil painting on panel (grisaille), Putti around a Fire: Winter, manner of Pieter Joseph Sauvage (Tournai 1744 - Tournai 1818), 18th century. From a set of four canvases inspired by, and with elements taken from prints by François Boucher (1703 -1770), showing putti engaged in appropriate seasonal activities. A roundel of three naked putti around a fire in a wood, the one on the left is blowing on the flames through a pipe, the one in the centre, wearing a hat, is crying, the third on the right is seated, wearing a cloak over his shoulders and is warming himself by stretching out both his arms to the flames.

Provenance

Bequeathed by Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart (1871-1951) to the National Trust in and transferred to Montacute House, 1960 after the death of Lady Stewart.
