Summary
Sampler, undated, mid to late seventeenth century. Linen embroidered with coloured silks, linen and silver and silver-gilt threads using long-armed cross, chain, double-running, satin, detached buttonhole, Algerian eye, raised plaited braid and stem stitches, with laid and couched work and pulled work. A band filled with 'blackwork' patterns. Wide centre band contains the figure of an archer and many animals, including a donkey and an elephant. Band near bottom contains 'boxers' with padded faces, and wearing collars, belted suits and boots. Selvedge lower edge, other sides hemmed. Photo copyright NTPL/Richard Pike
