Oil painting on canvas, Joseph Green (1690-1759). 20th century copy by Mrs Basil Hall of an original said to be dated 1739 and inaccurately attributed to J. Verelst. An inscription on the lower edge frame reads: 'Joseph Green of Horbury and Wakefield, York copy by Mrs Basil Hall after J Verelst of 1739'.
Full description
Joseph Green was born in Tong near Bradford and moved to Wakefield around 1720 where he worked as a dyer.
Provenance
One of a pair of portraits (see also NT 593157) said to have been discovered by Frank Green's nephew, Peter Green, and copied. Hung in Yellow Corridor 1933-64, Court Room 1964 to date. Gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) in 1933 (after the original gift of Treasurer's House and contents in 1930).
