Summary
Oil painting on canvas of Francis Drake (1696-1771), York Historian and author of Eboracum, by Nathan Drake (Lincoln c.1728 - York 1778). Monogrammed and dated: 'N.D. pinxt 1758'. A painted oval half-length portrait, head turned to the left, in a powdered wig, wearing a red velvet coat and waistcoat with slim gold braiding and gold buttons, white stock. A similar portrait of Francis Drake by Nathan Drake is in the York City Art Gallery collection. The artist is thought to have been a cousin of the sitter. Inscription on back: 'Francis Drake F.S.A... a celebrated Surgeon and Antiquary in the City of York, the History of which is published under the title of Eboracum. The same gentleman was also the compiler of the Parliamentary History a work daily increasing in authority and replete with valuable matter. Mr Drake died...(date?) at his son's house in Beverley, Yorkshire (the Revd. Fr. Drake D.D) was interred in St Mary's Church in that town and an handsome marble monument with suitable inscription erected to his ...'.
Provenance
Acquired at unknown date by Frank Green, apparently without knowing who the subject was. Hung in Tapestry Room 1930-66, then into store (including York City Art Gallery 1975-1991) before redisplay in Tapestry room to date. Gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954), with Treasurer's House in 1930
