Summary
Oil painting on canvas, circa 1740, of a male member of the Beaumont family of Whitley Beaumont, nr Huddersfield. Attributed to Hamlet Winstanley (Warrington 1698 - Warrington 1756).. Full-length portrait of a young man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, his left arm out, his right hand in his pocket, wearing a blue coat and pink waistcoat with gold frogging and embroidered with gold braiding. Red drape falling to the left. En suite with NT 593119 & NT 593117. Previously incorrectly identified as an admiral on account of the clothing style worn by the subject. Previously identified as possibly Thomas Beaumont (1723-1785) of The Oaks, Darton, Yorkshire but more likely to be Henry Beaumont (1716-1743) of Whitley Beaumont, older brother of Richard Beaumont (subject of NT 593119).
Provenance
According to a 1938 memo, the three Beaumont portraits (described as by Hudson) were bought c.1905 by Frank Green at the same time as he bought chairs NT 592851 from H.F. Beaumont, Whitley Beaumont, Yorkshire. On William and Mary Staircase 1908 to date; gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954).
