Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Holt, Mrs Beaumont (1728-1791) attributed to Hamlet Winstanley (Warrington 1698 - Warrington 1756), circa 1740. A full-length portrait of a young woman walking to the right, gazing at the spectator, her right hand pointing downwards her left hand holding a fold of her cloak, she is wearing a white satin dress with a pink scarf blowing round her; a whippet running in front; an urn right and a wall behind. A rectangle enclosing the upper part of her body is outlined by joins or folds in the canvas.
Provenance
According to a 1938 memo, the three Beaumont portraits (described as by Hudson) were bought c.1905 by Frank Green at the same time as he bought chairs NT 592851 from H.F. Beaumont, Whitley Beaumont, Yorkshire. On William and Mary Staircase 1908 to date; gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954)

Marks and inscriptions
Recto: after varnish removal by Gillian Walker in 1993/4, two inscriptions in – very oddly – what appeared to be graphite appeared, one – Elizabeth – on the dress of the sitter, the other – illegible – on the shoulder of the dog. [cf. no.14].
