Full description
The reverse of the panel is branded with the arms of the City of Antwerp - two open palms above a three-towered castle - showing that the piece had been inspected, and its quality approved, by the elder of the panel-makers' trade in accordance with the regulations governing the Antwerp panel-makers within the Guild of St Luke. These regulations, introduced in November 1617, also required the panel-maker to apply his own personal mark. Here, the distinctive looped stamp of Guilliam Gabron (1586 - 1674) is present between the hands and castle. (Additional research by Heather Precious and Trish Jay).
