Summary
Ewer, one of two (see 581679), porcelain, oviform body with tall slender neck and loop-handle, pierced for a mount, pinched spout at rim, made in Arita, Japan, 1670-1690; decorated in overglaze polychrome enamels (Kakiemon-style), painted with two lobed panels of boys in Chinese-style dress, one holding a fan and the other a parasol beside a prunus tree issuing from rockwork, divided by lotus motifs with chrysanthemum, handle with karakusa scrollwork.
Full description
Similar figures appear on a group of large jars where the parasol is open, at least five are in the Porzellansammlung, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Other jugs of this European form after Delft ware originals ordered by the Dutch East India Company, are in the British Museum (Franks.1036) and National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden (3304-01). The palette is typical of the Kakiemon palette, but may have been decorated at one of several enameling kilns in Arita and not necessarily at the Sakaida Kakiemon studio.
