Summary
STOLEN IN 1991. Tapestry, wool and silk, 6½-7 warps per cm, 'America', Flemish, probably Antwerp, c.1680-1720. Five women in a landscape setting with attributes symbolic of the continent America, including elephant tusks, a box of treasure, bows and arrows, and an animal which may be intended for an alligator, one of the animals associated with America. In the background are two fountains and a palatial building with a formal garden. The tapestry was stolen on 2 August 1991 along with one panel from the 'Marcus Aurelius' set. (Helen Wyld, 2009)
Provenance
Ferrers Collection, Baddesley Clinton; bought by Graham Baron Ash for Packwood House during the 1930s, and given by him to the National Trust in 1941. Stolen from Packwood House on 2 August 1991.
