Summary
A walnut and 'seaweed' marquetry chest-on-stand, English, circa 1690-1710. The rectangular top with central oval panel of scrolling foliage and with similar corner quadrants, above two short and three long drawers, each with rounded panels of scrolling foliage, all on an ebonised background, the top and drawers all crossbanded in walnut, the stand with apron moulding and one long drawer, raised on cabriole legs with pad feet, the handles and legs are not the original. 'Seaweed' marquetry is the name given to panels of dense highly stylised foliate scrolls such as those seen here. Such marquetry became fashionable in the reign of William and Mary and continued through the first decade of the 1700s and even on into the 1720s in the case of longcase clocks.
